LibriVox recording of The Prayer of Manasseh, King James Version. Read by Sam Stinson. The Prayer of Manasseh is a short work of only 15 verses that purports to be the penitential prayer of the Judean king Manasseh, who is recorded in the Bible as one of the most idolatrous (2 Kings 21:1-18). However, after having been taken captive by the Assyrians, he prays for mercy (2 Chronicles 33:10-17) and turns from his idolatrous ways. This uncanonical early Christian work claims to tell the story of the circumstances surrounding Mary's conception and birth, her marriage with Joseph, the birth of Jesus, and the flight to Egypt. While it's obviously more legend than fact, it's also a very early snapshot of the early Church's traditions and "family stories". There are also later and longer versions of this story, like the so-called "Gospel of the Nativity of Mary", but this is the oldest. Part 2 has a brief...

LibriVox recording of Additions to Esther, from the Douay-Rheims Version. Read by Sam Stinson. An additional six chapters appear interspersed in Esther in the Septuagint, the Greek translation, which then was noted by Jerome in compiling the Latin Vulgate; additionally, the Greek text contains many small changes in the meaning of the main text. The extra chapters include several prayers to God, perhaps because it was felt that the above-mentioned lack of mention of God was inappropriate in a...

The Shepherd of Hermas was a "bestseller" among early Christians (late Second Century), and was nearly designated a book of scripture. It's not clear whether it's supposed to be instructive fiction or an actual account of visions by Hermas, a freed slave turned shady businessman, worried by his sharp-tongued wife and troubled kids. The book provides much food for thought and much to disagree with. Book 2: Part 1 | Part 2

The setting of the book is about a century after the conquest of...
